World AIDS Day 2007

Tomorrow is the 19th annual World AIDS Day.
Nineteen years of celebrating this day and it continues to be so very important. Why?
Well, I cannot begin to say it better or more concise than Alexandra does.
Please check it out.

Thank you for the reminding us. In 1988, I had a friend whose father died of AIDS. He contracted the disease from a blood transfusion given during an operation. At that time, not many people were educated about AIDS so his wife refused to tell anyone why he had died for fear of having her family ostracized. She was now a single mother of two boys and I guess she figured life would be hard enough for her without having people treat her and her boys differently.

I am glad that there is more education and, more important, more research on AIDS now. We have come a long way in 19 years but I hope they can find a cure sooner rather than later.

I lost a cousin and several friends to the disease.

What many people don't know is that Houston was one of the early Ground Zeros for the early AIDS virus. I watched it cut a devastating swath through the gay community tere.

Dustin, the 1980's were horrid. As if the virus wasn't bad enough, people's ignorance made it worse.
This day is important because as far as we've come, ignorance and fear still hinder folks from getting tested or treated. It's nice that you remembered your friend's family.

Monica, I lost many friends also so I celebrate their lives and the fact that I haven't had to add a name to the loss friends list for many years now.
I did not know that about Houston!
